Firewood Storage Tips

People with a wood-burning fire pit, fireplace, or ovens need firewood in bulk. When you buy firewood by the cord, you need to store it somewhere and ensure it stays as safe, clean, and dry as possible. Correctly storing firewood protects it from moisture, mold, fungus, infestations, and decay. Follow these simple firewood storage tips to keep your firewood organized:

  • Do not place firewood on the ground- It is critical to choose the firewood location wisely. Always keep firewood off the ground at an elevated place to allow proper airflow and prevent moisture buildup. Ensure the firewood is not placed indoors, too close to the house, or leaning against it, and keep it away from trees and shrubbery.
  • Inspect the storage area properly- Before storing the firewood, and even after, ensure that the space is not cluttered and is bug and moisture free. Maintain proper cleanliness to prevent unwanted visitors.
  • Stack it correctly- Do not cram wood logs too closely together or toss them haphazardly. Stack the firewood properly in rows, leaving adequate space for air to circulate freely. Stacking firewood properly offers protection from insects and rodents and keeps the logs dry and decay-free.
  • Cover the woodpile- Outdoor storage exposes the firewood to the elements. Use a tarp or plastic sheathing to cover the firewood to increase its lifespan and protect it from the elements. To ensure proper airflow, leave the sides open.
  • Burn the oldest wood first- The oldest logs are the most seasoned. Burning them first will help prevent pest infestation.
